Mountain tourism is the backbone of the tourism industry in Nepal. The peak profile conceptualized when there was a need for the factual information regarding the mountains of Nepal which was unavailable elsewhere for mountaineers. Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) initiated to prepare the mountain peak profile of Nepal with the aim of creating the online portal on mountains of Nepal and promoting at the national and international level.
The Main Peak Profile Preparation Committee under the chairmanship of Director General of Department of Tourism formed Peak Profile Preparation Sub Committee (PPPSC) under the leadership of Ang Tshering Sherpa, past president of NMA on 2070/09/17 (1 Jan 2014) which comprised of members from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation, Survey Department, Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, tourism related national organizations, experts and professionals of different disciplines including mapping, environment and geography. The formed committee decided to collect detailed information of 476 mountain peaks of Nepal.
Peak Profile Preparation Sub-Committee was re-formed on 2075/01/27 ( 2018 May 10) under the leadership of Santa Bir Lama, President of Nepal Mountaineering Association. The sub-committee also formed a technical working group under the chairmanship of border expert and former Director General of Survey Department- Mr. Buddhi Narayan Shrestha. The technical working group worked on the GIS data, amenities around the mountains and other essential information related to each mountain.
PPPC consulted with different professionals and experts from mountaineering, travel and tourism in Nepal and adjoining countries. The committee developed the structure and guidelines as per the contribution made by various experts on the issue. In the due course of time Nepal Tourism Board and other stakeholders supported in the preparation of Nepal Himal Peak Profile.

Disseminate information about mountains of Nepal.
Prepare a database of mountains of Nepal.
Promote mountain tourism & adventure tourism of Nepal.
Provide necessary information to the expedition teams and mountaineers.
Identification of more peaks above 8,000 meter.
Identification of unknown peaks.
Attract expedition teams to climb unclimbed peaks of Nepal.
Assist the Government of Nepal to open unclimbed peaks.
Increase the amount of royalty to the government.
